Bremen is a palate pleaser: A wealth of exquisite creations lovingly and skilfully made by local artisan producers is a testament to the city's culinary credentials. We have put together a Gourmet Route for you which offers plenty of opportunities to buy products en route – for yourself, as a gift for your loved ones, or as a perfect souvenir. In the city centre, all shops are within easy walking distance. In the districts of Überseestadt and Walle, we would recommend cycling.

Good food and drinks at the heart of the Bremen lifestyle

Melt-in-the-mouth chocolates, fine wines, aromatic coffee and refreshing beer – Bremen has been a trading hub for exquisite food and drinks for hundreds of years. Did you know that every other cup of coffee drunk in Germany is supplied by a Bremen company? Or that the first coffee shop in the German-speaking countries opened in Bremen back in 1673?

Here, you'll find both international brands and family-owned businesses that are steeped in tradition. The array of restaurants, bars, cafés and artisan food producers means there's no shortage of places to enjoy the finer things in life. In many small businesses and workshops, locals put their heart and soul into creating the most wonderful handmade delicacies. These make the perfect souvenir for visiting tourists. Visitors can also glimpse behind the scenes and find out how the finished product is made.

Our Gourmet Route is designed to provide an introduction the world of good food and drinks in Bremen. Enjoy the variety on offer and maybe you will find a little something to take home.

Bremen's new world: Überseestadt

Diverse & delicious

Old warehouses and contemporary architecture line weather-worn quays and spruced-up boulevards. You can hear the lapping waves and the occasional low rumble of trains travelling to and from the port. Glass, steel and brick dominate Überseestadt, Bremen's new harbour district. It will be a number of years yet before Europe's biggest construction site reaches completion, but this area and the neighbouring Walle district are already home to art galleries, restaurants and various artisan producers of exquisite specialities from northern Germany. Those who enjoy quality drinks will feel particularly at home in Überseestadt, where fair-trade coffee, refreshing craft beer and high-end spirits are waiting to be sampled.

If you struggle to pick a favourite, you can also buy one of the various Bremen boxes, which contain a medley of tasty treats from Bremen's artisan food makers. They come in four different sizes and a number of variants – some with alcohol and some without – ensuring that there is an option for every taste and appetite. These boxes make a great souvenir to bring back from beautiful Bremen.
