Whether out of conviction or due to intolerances - a gluten-free diet has long been part of everyday life for many people. Fortunately, more and more cafés, restaurants and bakeries in Bremen are following suit and offering delicious gluten-free alternatives. We'll show you where you can enjoy gluten-free food in the Hanseatic city - from breakfast to dinner, from sweet snacks to hearty pizzas.
Important: It's best to ask on the spot whether possible cross-contamination can be ruled out and which products really suit your diet.
Two bakeries in Bremen provide you with gluten-free bread and bread rolls!
In Walle, the Schröder bakery still bakes using traditional methods - and therefore also caters to allergy sufferers. Their breads are laboratory-tested and partly gluten-free, including rice bread and multigrain seed bread, for example.
And you'll also find what you're looking for in the Viertel : The wholemeal bakery Effenberger has been baking with tradition since 1956 - from its own grain and in 100% organic quality. In addition to their single-grain breads, you can also find gluten-free varieties here.
In Bremen's Neustadt district, Café Yellowbird is the perfect place to start the day: not only does it serve first-class coffee, but also creative breakfast options - some of which are vegan and also include gluten-free bread. The cozy cafés Farsoe, Concordia and Stora also offer gluten-free bread.
In the city center the Espresso House on Obernstraße awaits you with fine coffee specialties - and yes, also with gluten-free cakes and brownies that are worth seeing and tasting.
And if you get a little peckish during your shopping spree: at the weekly market on Domshof, you can find almond pastries and Sicilian cannolis at 'Arthur's Schlemmerparadies' - gluten-free, of course.

Fancy a burger? Then 1885 - Die Burger is the place for you: here you can get juicy burgers with gluten-free buns. Italian cuisine continues at Il Blu in the Viertel - with gluten-free pizza and pasta in a stylish ambience. Soup fans will find what they are looking for at SuppKultur, where fresh, gluten-free stews await you every day.
Eat fresh, natural and modern at dean&david: many dishes here are also gluten-free - as well as vegetarian or vegan. At Vengo die Gemüseküche, you can even feast your way through its own gluten-free menu.
The Kagi Bar focuses on seasonal vegetables and organic ingredients - many dishes are gluten-free by default. At the Feuerwache in Überseestadt, every pizza can be served gluten-free on request.
A real insider tip: at Tapiocaria in Neustadt, Brazilian pancakes are made from manioc flour and are therefore completely gluten-free. And if you're out and about on Bremen's market square, you can order gluten-free pasta from Due Fratelli - just let them know in advance.
