Bremen – aerospace city

Bremen has been making its mark on the world of science for more than 100 years and can justifiably call itself a city of aerospace expertise. From shipbuilding and aircraft construction to space labs and rocket stages, Bremen has cemented its reputation as a home of high-tech industry.

Space tech tour

At the Airbus facility, visitors can get an insight into the latest research and development for the space programme.

The space age took off in Bremen in 1961, when three north German companies, Focke-Wulf, Hamburger Flugzeugbau and Weser Flugzeugbau, established Entwicklungsring Nord, a collaborative venture that soon made a name for itself in international aerospace as ERNO. Today, ERNO's successor in Bremen, Airbus is a leading global industrial hub for space transport, manned space flight and space robotics. Airbus and the engineering expertise available in Bremen are what make major European space programmes possible. Projects that rely on the skills and know-how that Bremen offers include the International Space Station, Spacelab and the Columbus module, the ATV Automated Transfer Vehicle, the Ariane European space rocket and missions to the Moon and Mars.
