In the heart of Bremen, just a stone's throw from the market square and the Bremen Town Musicians, is the popular Schlachte promenade along the Weser.
The term ‘Schlachte’, first mentioned in 1250 goes back to the Low German word ‘Slait’ and describes the piling-like constructions which were used in the 13th century to reinforce the banks of the Weser. Today the Schlachte with its unique maritime flair, the Weserpromenade and its gourmet offerings is a meeting point for all generations, for Bremen’s citizens and tourists alike.
Boat tours on the Weser river
Opt for a trip on the water or simply watch the boats go by, take a stroll or while away the hours eating, drinking, partying or simply enjoying life. There is something for everyone on the Schlachte Embankment.
From a 'Captain's Dinner', a theatre evening or concert on board ship to leisurely tours to Bremerhaven or further inland on the Wümme or Lesum rivers, the Schlachte pleasure boats offer a varied programme of attractions.
Going out along the Schlachte
Those who prefer things a bit more informal will enjoy the many terraces and beer gardens that offer plenty of scope to relax and unwind. Try a typical Bremen beer or a Bavarian beer in the traditional one-litre glass, enjoy coffee and cakes on land or on board ship. The range of food and drink on offer at the Schlachte Embankment is as diverse as our guests. The beer gardens alone provide space for more than 2,000 people during the summer.
Throughout the year, the riverside promenade offers a number of varied events on or beside the water. From the start of May until the last weekend in September, you can get the weekend off to a swinging start with live music every Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Held since 1986, the Kajenmarkt or quayside market attracts tourists and locals in their thousands with a mix of music, market stalls and maritime charm.
In July, things hot up along the Schlachte Embankment, as the members of the Schlachte Marketing and Service Association put up a bar along the beer gardens and hold a BBQ party. On offer are spare ribs, suckling pig, wild boar sausages and other BBQ favourites, as well as active entertainments for all ages.

Schlachte-Zauber – a maritime Christmas market on the Weser
There is a wonderful, festive atmosphere on the Schlachte Embankment in December, as boats on the quayside are bathed in a blue glow and the aroma of smoked fish and freshly baked bread fills the air. Historical, maritime and seasonal – that is the magical world of the Schlachte-Zauber. The food stalls in the beer gardens of the adjacent restaurants are lovingly and imaginatively decorated. The ideal place to stop off for a delicious glühwein.
In the taverns of the historical section of the Schlachte-Zauber market, you can try mead, fruit wine and even 'love potions' while listening to the songs of the minstrel as the planks of the historical ships creak quietly along the riverbank. Craftsmen, market traders, jugglers and street entertainers all add to the atmosphere, recreating a bygone era when the cog ships would return from afar to the Hanseatic port of Bremen laden with valuable cargo.
